Volkswagen Group Africa sets new monthly production record

Changan Commercial is preparing to re-enter the South African market in September, reviving a brand that once played a central role in supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs.
Previously sold locally under the Chana name, the vehicles built a reputation for reliability and affordability, with more than 8 000 units sold during its earlier presence, claims the manufacturer.
The relaunch introduces a new generation of five models, each backed by a five-year or 200 000 kilometre manufacturer-warranty. The rollout is being led by Jameel Motors South Africa, supported by a growing dealer and aftersales network to ensure nationwide access to parts and servicing.
Changan’s commercial vehicle history dates back to 1984 when the company shifted into civilian vehicle manufacturing and launched its first mass-produced light commercial vehicles. Developed through a technical partnership with Suzuki, these early microvans and mini-trucks established the brand’s reputation for accessible mobility solutions.
By the late 1990s, Changan had expanded its offering, culminating in the launch of the first-generation Changan Star in 1999. This model achieved global success, with cumulative sales exceeding 10 million units and holding the top position in its segment in China for eight consecutive years.
In South Africa, the Chana brand became a familiar sight across industries including trade, services, logistics and small-scale distribution. A total of 8 456 units were sold locally, many of which remain in use today.
South Africa’s economy relies heavily on small and medium-sized enterprises, many of which depend on affordable and dependable transport to operate efficiently. Changan Commercial’s reintroduction responds directly to this need, offering vehicles designed to support entrepreneurs, fleet operators and small businesses, it states.
