NADA acknowledges revised guidelines from CCSA

The National Automobile Dealers’ Association (NADA) acknowledges the Competition Commission of South Africa’s (CCSA) revised Automotive Aftermarket Guidelines, published at the end of September 2024.

These updates aim to foster greater inclusivity and competition, creating a structured and transparent environment that empowers consumers with more choices.

“We fully support a healthy and competitive automotive sector where there is a place for everyone,” says Brandon Cohen, Chairperson of NADA.

The revised guidelines, which still require further analysis, enhance the original document in several areas to broaden consumer options in the aftermarket. However, NADA emphasises the vital role franchised dealers continue to play in ensuring safety and maintaining high service standards.

“When consumers are well-informed, they can make decisions that best meet their individual needs,” Brandon states. “With OEMs investing significantly in vehicle development, franchised dealers are well-positioned to leverage these advancements with up-to-date technical expertise.”

As franchises, the OEM training programmes are comprehensive and thorough. This extensive training equips franchisees with the knowledge and skills necessary for accurate diagnosis and repair, fostering consumer trust. While there may be exceptions, NADA stands by the effectiveness of this training in delivering reliable service.

“Additionally, franchisees benefit from the support of their franchisor, providing a clear avenue for recourse in the event of any unresolved issues. This oversight significantly enhances trust, as most concerns are effectively addressed and resolved. NADA underscores that franchised dealers are more than just service providers; they offer a holistic approach to customer care, extending from the point of purchase throughout a vehicle’s life cycle.

“Franchised dealers adhere to a code of ethics that prioritises consumer protection and fairness in all areas, from safety and servicing to mobility solutions and financing,” he adds. “Our members are committed to offering high standards of recourse, accountability and customer satisfaction.

“The CCSA’s willingness to engage with NADA and other stakeholders reflects the value of a shared vision to promote trust and transparency. As the automotive market continues to evolve, NADA believes there are opportunities for all participants in the ecosystem to thrive,” says Brandon.

“Franchised dealers have always championed transparency, safety and consumer choice, and we will continue to uphold these principles in the years to come.. NADA remains committed to ensuring that consumers trust the industry, and through continued collaboration with the CCSA, we hope to build an even stronger automotive sector,” Brandon concludes.
