UD Trucks recognises driver excellence at Extra Mile Challenge

The event took place at Zwartkops Raceway in Centurion, bringing together drivers from across the region to showcase their skills, knowledge and dedication to safe and efficient operations.

The Extra Mile Challenge forms part of UD Trucks’ broader driver development initiatives, including the UD Driver Trainer Programme. This equips drivers with practical knowledge to operate vehicles safely and responsibly, while supporting customers in improving fuel efficiency, vehicle care and overall productivity.

Opening the competition, Esaia Taunyane, Sales Director at UD Trucks Southern Africa, emphasised the vital role of logistics in the economy and the people who make it possible. “Logistics is the backbone of our economy, connecting businesses, communities and people every day. At the centre of this industry are our professional drivers, the unsung heroes who spend countless hours on the road keeping goods moving and businesses operating. The Extra Mile Challenge gives us an opportunity to recognise these individuals, celebrate their professionalism and shine a spotlight on the important role they play.”

Drivers competed in two vehicle categories, UD Quon and UD Quester, undergoing assessments designed to reflect real‑world transport demands. These included pre‑trip vehicle inspections, safe and fuel‑efficient driving, vehicle handling and manoeuvring, and overall operational excellence.

Following rigorous evaluations, two drivers emerged victorious: Sifiso Mabuza of Roadtrain Investments in South Africa claimed the Quon Ultimate Driver title, while Farhard Abdurahaman Omar of Shalfah Logistics Limited in Kenya won the Quester Ultimate Driver category.

Both winners will represent the Southern Africa Hub at the 2026 UD Trucks Extra Mile Challenge Global Final, scheduled for 20–22 October at the UD Experience Center in Ageo, Japan. They will compete against leading professional drivers from around the world.

Graham Kolm, General Manager: SSA Markets at UD Trucks, noted that the competition reflects the company’s focus on supporting customers beyond the vehicle itself. “At UD Trucks, we believe that ultimate dependability is about more than the truck. The event also reinforced UD Trucks’ approach to Total Cost of Ownership, with safe driving practices, correct vehicle inspection and responsible operation contributing to improved productivity and reduced operating costs.
