Chery South Africa has launched a nationwide competition that calls on the public to help name its upcoming bakkie before its official local debut.
The initiative gives one entrant the chance to leave a lasting mark on the brand while also standing to win R100 000 towards the purchase of any Chery vehicle. In addition, the winner may travel to China in October, subject to final confirmation and competition terms.
The chosen name will be revealed during Media Day at the Festival of Motoring, forming part of the introduction of Chery’s newest model to the South African market. Verene Petersen, National Marketing Manager at Chery South Africa, explained that the decision to involve the public reflects the creativity and expressiveness of local motorists.
She says South Africans often give their vehicles names that capture their character, performance or role in daily life, and Chery wanted to build on that tradition.
The competition encourages originality, with entrants asked to submit names that could become part of Chery’s legacy in South Africa. Submissions close on 24 August 2026, and the brand will use social media platforms to share stories, ideas and content from participants, creators and enthusiasts.
Chery’s decision to invite the public into the naming process comes as the company continues to expand its presence in South Africa. The new bakkie is designed for work, family life and leisure, marking Chery’s entry into a segment that holds particular importance in the local market. Full specifications, pricing and launch details will be announced later, but for now the focus remains on what South Africans will choose to call the vehicle.
The competition offers not only a financial reward but also the opportunity to influence how the new bakkie will be introduced and remembered. Until the official reveal, Chery is leaving the decision to Mzansi, asking the public to provide a name that will define its latest model.
