Chery Group, in collaboration with Wuhu Chery Technology Co., Ltd. (Chery Tech), has taken a significant step towards building a localised automotive supply chain ecosystem in South Africa with its Supplier Investment Conference, held at the Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC) in Rosslyn.
Hosted under the theme “Engineering the Future of Supply”, the conference brought together public sector leaders, industry associations, international component manufacturers and local suppliers to support Chery's long-term manufacturing and localisation ambitions following the company's recent acquisition of its manufacturing facility in Rosslyn.
A key objective was to introduce a Chinese delegation of 23 Chery Automobile component suppliers to South African suppliers and industry stakeholders. The engagement created an opportunity for the delegation to assess local capabilities, identify potential partners and explore future investment opportunities.
“Our goal is to build an integrated supply chain ecosystem that supports sustainable localisation and drives technological growth,” Tony Liu, CEO of Chery South Africa, says.
Junfeng Shen, Assistant General Manager of Chery Tech, outlined Phase 1 of the company's global “3+1” market expansion strategy in South Africa. The initial localisation phase will focus on intelligent electronics, body and chassis systems, interior and exterior trim, and specialised integration modules.
Chery Tech and its affiliate enterprises presented a range of technologies and capabilities, including advanced cockpit and ADAS systems, high- and low-voltage wiring harnesses, chassis and aluminium components, thermal management systems, braking technologies, smart seating, fuel cell pumps and electrolyser technologies.
A key topic at the conference was the need to increase local production of New Energy Vehicle (NEV) components, reducing dependence on imports while creating opportunities for South African manufacturers to participate in the growing NEV economy.
Delegates also discussed the development of a local battery value chain, with South Africa's mineral wealth presenting an opportunity to support greater beneficiation, advanced manufacturing and battery-related technologies.
Representatives from the AIDC, Tshwane Automotive Special Economic Zone (TASEZ), Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA), Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), and Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) outlined incentives, infrastructure and investment support available to suppliers establishing local operations.
A panel discussion featuring the National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers (NAACAM), the National Association of Automotive Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) explored strategies for building resilient supply networks centred on transformation, inclusive growth and long-term industrial development.
By connecting Chery's global supplier network with South African industry and investment opportunities, the “Engineering the Future of Supply” conference forms part of the company's broader commitment to supporting local investment, job creation, skills transfer and the development of a stronger automotive manufacturing ecosystem in South Africa, it states.
