Volvo Cars has introduced the new ES90 in South Africa, positioning it as the brand’s fully electric flagship sedan.
Designed as a premium long distance cruiser, the ES90 combines minimalist Scandinavian styling with advanced electric technology and a long driving range. The model launches locally in a single rear wheel drive configuration, with additional versions expected to follow later.
What is it?
The ES90 is a large executive electric sedan and sits at the top of Volvo’s passenger car range. Built on the company’s dedicated SPA2 electric architecture, which it shares with the EX90 SUV, the car is designed as a luxury long distance vehicle that combines performance, comfort and efficiency.
With a length of 5 000mm and a wheelbase of 3 102mm, the ES90 is positioned in the same segment as other large premium electric sedans, offering generous interior space and a strong road presence.
Exterior:
The ES90 follows Volvo’s restrained Scandinavian design philosophy, with clean lines and a sleek, aerodynamic silhouette. The large sedan proportions and long wheelbase give the car a commanding presence, while the overall shape remains elegant rather than aggressive.
Despite its size, the ES90 maintains a smooth profile intended to maximise efficiency and driving range. The design balances a premium luxury appearance with the practicality expected of a modern electric vehicle.
Boot space measures 446 litres and can expand to 1 427 litres with the rear seats folded down. An additional 27 litre front boot provides extra storage.

Interior:
Inside, the ES90 focuses on simplicity and comfort. The cabin follows a minimalist layout with high quality materials and a calm design that emphasises space and usability.
A panoramic roof allows more natural light into the interior, enhancing the sense of openness. Higher specification models feature an electro chromatic roof that allows occupants to adjust transparency electronically.
The quiet nature of the electric drivetrain contributes to a relaxed cabin atmosphere, while optional premium audio from Bowers and Wilkins provides a high quality listening experience.

Specifications and models:
The ES90 will be offered locally in three trim levels: Core, Plus and Ultra.
The Core serves as the entry point but still includes a wide range of standard equipment. The Plus adds additional comfort and interior features, while the Ultra represents the most luxurious version with upgrades such as adaptive air suspension, additional interior finishes and enhanced parking assistance systems.
Powertrain:
The ES90 is powered by a rear mounted electric motor driving the rear wheels. The system produces 245kW and 480Nm of torque, allowing the sedan to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 6.6 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 180km/h.
Energy comes from a 92kWh battery pack, which delivers a claimed driving range of up to 755km on the WLTP cycle.
The car uses an 800 volt electrical system that supports fast charging. When connected to a compatible DC fast charger, the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in around 25 minutes.
Pricing:
Pricing starts at R1 590 000 for the ES90 Core, with higher specification Plus and Ultra models expected to command higher prices.
