South African specialist SVI Engineering has unveiled the MAX Recon 6x6, a rapid deployment tactical vehicle built on Toyota's legendary Land Cruiser 70 Series chassis.
Far from a cosmetically enhanced off-roader, this is a purpose-engineered military platform designed for fast reaction, deep infiltration and sustained operational support across the most demanding environments.
At the core of the MAX Recon is a full 6x6 conversion, expanding the standard two-axle Land Cruiser layout into a three-axle arrangement capable of handling the considerable additional mass of armour, weaponry and mission equipment. Drive engagement can be selected for conditions, switching between 6x2, 6x4 or full 6x6 modes as terrain demands.
A bogie rear suspension system enhances wheel articulation off road, while heavy-duty rear differential casings manufactured locally are paired with retained Toyota components to keep servicing straightforward and parts readily available.
Protection is offered up to Level B6, encompassing the engine bay, firewall and roof. The roof coverage is specifically noted as relevant against aerial threats, including drones. A split B6-rated windscreen can be folded down when required, and the co-driver position features a forward-facing weapon mount.
Each door opening accommodates a weapon mount, while composite half-doors with quick-release hinges allow rapid removal depending on the threat level. Canvas covers or full armoured doors can be fitted to suit the mission profile.
Modularity is central to the programme. Current configurations include a reconnaissance layout, a ZU-23 autocannon system developed in partnership with the CSIR, a 14.5mm anti-aircraft system, Scorpion automated mortar systems in 60mm and 81mm forms, a 107mm rocket system and a dedicated drone operations base.
The platform also supports secure communications, command and control tools, electronic jamming equipment and broader electronic warfare suites. A 120mm mortar option and enhanced counter-drone measures are already in development.
Changeovers between configurations are designed to be completed using basic hand tools and lifting equipment, minimising downtime and allowing the same vehicle to fulfil different roles as operational requirements shift.
With its familiar Land Cruiser foundations, proven 6x6 drivetrain and adaptable mission architecture, SVI's MAX Recon presents a compelling case for military customers seeking a vehicle that can be deployed at short notice, maintained in theatre and reconfigured without lengthy workshop intervention.
