MG expands its B segment line up with new MG3 and ZS Pro

MG Motor South Africa has added two new models to its local range with the introduction of the MG3 hatchback and MG ZS Pro compact SUV or crossover.

Both are new additions rather than simple updates and are positioned to strengthen the brand’s presence in the highly competitive B segment. They arrive as part of MG’s renewed push in South Africa following its return to the market just over a year ago.

What is it?

The MG3 and MG ZS Pro target two of the most contested segments in the country. The MG3 is a compact hatchback aimed at rivals such as the Volkswagen Polo Vivo and Suzuki Swift, while the ZS Pro competes in the small SUV space against models like the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro and Nissan Magnite. Together, they form the core of MG’s more affordable offering, sitting below larger and more expensive models in the range.

The line up and main differences:

The MG3 line up consists of four derivatives, including naturally aspirated petrol versions and a hybrid flagship. Buyers can choose between manual and CVT transmissions on the standard petrol models, while the Hybrid+ sits at the top of the range with a more advanced drivetrain.

The ZS Pro range is simpler, with two derivatives powered by the same turbocharged engine and paired with a CVT gearbox. The key differences lie in specification levels, with the Luxury model adding more technology and safety features.

Exterior:

The MG3 adopts a more expressive hatchback design, with a distinctive front end and compact proportions. Details such as LED headlamps and 16-inch alloy wheels give it a slightly sportier appearance than some of its rivals.

The ZS Pro takes a more traditional SUV approach, with a larger grille, higher stance and more pronounced body lines. Features such as LED lighting, roof rails and larger alloy wheels contribute to a more substantial road presence.

Interior:

Inside, both models focus on digital displays and modern layouts. The MG3 features a dual screen setup with a 7-inch driver display and a 10.25-inch infotainment system, along with smartphone connectivity and driver assistance systems on higher trims.

The ZS Pro offers a more spacious cabin, benefiting from its larger footprint. It adds a bigger dual screen layout of up to 12.3 inches, along with additional safety features such as blind spot detection and rear cross traffic alert. Overall practicality is also improved, with more rear legroom and luggage space.

Engines:

The MG3 range includes a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, offered with either a manual or CVT gearbox. At the top of the range, the Hybrid+ model produces 155kW and 425Nm through a self-charging hybrid system paired with a three speed automatic transmission.

The MG ZS Pro uses a 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 125kW and 275Nm, driving the front wheels through a CVT gearbox.
