South Africa's cheapest electric cars are becoming more affordable

Today, motorists can buy a fully electric hatchback for around R330 000 to R350 000, bringing EV ownership within reach of a much wider group of buyers.

The latest entrants are the Geely E2 and Chery Q, which have intensified competition with the BYD Dolphin Surf and Dongfeng Box. While all four are compact hatchbacks aimed primarily at urban driving, they each offer modern technology, competitive driving ranges and comprehensive warranty packages.

Geely E2:

The Geely E2 currently claims the title of South Africa's most affordable electric passenger vehicle. Available in Aspire and Apex derivatives, the entry level Aspire combines an 85 kW electric motor with a 39.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery delivering a claimed range of up to 325 km on the WLTP cycle.

Despite its competitive price, the E2 includes a digital instrument cluster, a large central touchscreen, advanced driver assistance systems and fast charging capability, making it one of the strongest value propositions in the entry level EV market.

BYD Dolphin Surf:

The BYD Dolphin Surf was the model that first made affordable EV ownership a reality in South Africa. Built on BYD's e Platform 3.0, the entry level Comfort derivative uses a 30.1 kWh Blade Battery and offers a claimed WLTP driving range of about 220 km, while higher specification models receive a larger battery.

The Dolphin Surf is also designed primarily for city use, although DC fast charging allows the battery to be replenished quickly during longer journeys. BYD's Blade Battery technology has also earned a strong reputation internationally for its safety and durability.

Dongfeng Box:

The Dongfeng Box offers buyers a larger body than most rivals in this price bracket while placing a strong emphasis on comfort and interior space. Its modern cabin features a large infotainment display, digital instrumentation and a generous equipment list.

Power comes from a single electric motor driving the front wheels, while the battery provides a claimed range of more than 300 km, depending on the model selected. Fast charging capability also allows the battery to recharge from 30% to 80% in well under an hour under suitable conditions.

Chery Q:

The Chery Q is scheduled to arrive in South Africa during September and will become one of the country's most affordable EVs. Chery has confirmed a starting price of around R350 000, placing it directly against the Geely E2, BYD Dolphin Surf and Dongfeng Box.

The compact hatchback uses a 90kW electric motor and is aimed at buyers looking for an affordable commuter vehicle with modern connectivity and a practical driving range. It also marks Chery's first fully electric passenger car for the South African market.

• The claimed ranges also depends on what method is used: WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure): Used by European and global standards and the CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle) & NEDC (New European Driving Cycle): Used primarily in the Chinese domestic market and older frameworks, sometimes describe as a bit optimistic compared to WLTP.
