The JAECOO J5 line-up will grow in August 2026 with the arrival of two new derivatives, the J5 SHS hybrid and the fully electric J5 BEV. Their introduction broadens the range to include petrol, hybrid and electric options, aimed at meeting varied motoring needs in South Africa.
What is it?
The J5 SHS and J5 BEV are additions to the existing J5 range, positioned as more efficient and technologically advanced alternatives to the petrol-powered models. The SHS introduces hybrid capability, while the BEV marks Jaecoo’s first fully electric vehicle in the local market. Together, they expand the brand’s footprint into the electrified segment, offering motorists a choice of propulsion systems without moving away from the J5’s established format.
Powertrains:
The J5 SHS combines a 1.5‑litre turbocharged petrol engine with a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission. Outputs are rated at 165kW and 295Nm, with drive sent to the front wheels. A small 1.83kWh battery enables short periods of electric‑only driving, particularly at low speeds. Claimed fuel consumption is 5.3 L/100km, translating to a theoretical range of more than 900km on a full tank.
The J5 BEV uses a 58.9kWh LFP-battery pack paired with a permanent magnet synchronous motor on the front axle. It produces 155kW and 288Nm. Charging performance includes a 30 to 80 per cent recharge in 28 minutes when connected to a DC fast charger. Range and consumption figures will be confirmed closer to launch.
Interior:
Both derivatives share a high level of standard equipment. Features include black leather upholstery, a 13.2‑inch infotainment screen, a power‑adjustable driver’s seat, panoramic moonroof, power‑operated tailgate, dual‑zone climate control and a suite of driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning. The SHS is fitted with a six‑speaker sound system, while the BEV gains an eight‑speaker arrangement.
Exterior:
The exterior design remains consistent with the J5’s established styling, with the new derivatives distinguished more by their powertrains than by visual changes. The inclusion of a panoramic moonroof and power‑operated tailgate underlines the focus on convenience and refinement.
Price and warranty:
The J5 SHS purchase price includes a 5-year/150 000 km warranty, a 10-year/one-million km engine warranty, 5-year/unlimited kilometre roadside assistance, and a 5-year/75 000 km service plan.
Its retail price is R459 900. The Jaecoo J5 BEV costs R549 900.
