Under the hood:

Both models boast the manufacturer’s six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology with a high‑revving character, maximum 375 kW and up to 650 Nm of torque. Two turbochargers, optimised direct injection, cooling and oil supply adapted for track use, a model-specific exhaust system with electrically operated flaps for emotionally stirring engine soundtrack, complete the picture.

The powertrains are enough to rocket the M-twins to 100 km/h in only 3.9 seconds, says BMW.

More competition tricks:

Extra variety in the powertrain offering includes an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. More good news is that both Competition models will be available with M xDrive all-wheel-drive systems for the first time from Q4 this year.

Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers and M Servotronic steering with variable ratio are fitted as standard. An integrated braking system with two settings for pedal feel and response is also new. M Compound brakes are standard and M Carbon ceramic brakes optional.

Extremely stiff body structure and chassis mounting thanks to measures, including model-specific bracing elements for the engine compartment, a front axle subframe with aluminium shear panel, underfloor bracing elements and a rear axle subframe with a rigid connection to the body.

Two body variants with their own individual exterior designs and an emotionally engaging aesthetic.

M Drive Professional premieres in these models and includes M Drift Analyser, M Laptimer and M Traction Control for a particularly intense performance experience on the racetrack.

We also see a significant expansion of driver assistance systems like Park Distance Control, Front Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Speed Limit Info fitted as standard. Options include Driving Assistant Professional with Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Active Navigation, Emergency Lane Assistant, Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant, BMW Drive Recorder and BMW Heads-Up Display with M-specific displays.

The M Racetrack Package, which is available for the first time, reduces vehicle weight by around 25 kilograms thanks to features such as M Carbon ceramic brakes, special M light-alloy wheels and M Carbon bucket seats.

Pricing:

BMW M3 Competition sedan (R1 860 000) and the BMW M4 Competition coupé (R1 940 000).

Competitors:

Audi S7 and Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 S.
