In the - dare one says - overcrowded bakkie market in South Africa, there is no slow-down in new bakkies coming to the country to take on the very well-established trio occupying the podium positions.

As a matter of fact, bakkies sell so well that the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max also occupy top positions in the overall new vehicles sales statistics in die country. The Toyota Hilux is the top selling new vehicle in the country.
Peugeot’s Landtrek have been around locally since 2021 and lately also as a single cab version. Not selling in the numbers Peugeot is hoping but some price adaptions along the way saw an increase in popularity since 2024. But not making but not making a dent in the overall bakkie sales.
And towards the end of last year, the Landtrek’s sibling from China arrived, the Changan Hunter.
The Changan Hunter and Peugeot Landtrek are siblings born from a joint project between Changan Automobile of China and PSA Group (Peugeot, now Stellantis). The underlying platform is the Changan F70, which Peugeot adapted into the Landtrek with its own design language and branding.

Except for cosmetic differences the biggest difference is under the bonnet. Despite the Hunter’s slightly larger displacement (2.0L vs 1.9L), both engines deliver very similar outputs. The difference is more about branding and market positioning than real-world performance.
The Changan Hunter’s styling is more utilitarian, with a bold grille and squared-off lines. Designed to emphasise toughness rather than flair.
The Peugeot Landtrek’s styling is sleeker, more lifestyle-oriented. Peugeot’s design cues (chrome accents, sculpted bodywork) make it look more premium. The single cab workhorses have a very basic or practical approach in terms of styling.
