Subaru’s new Outback will reach South Africa in the final quarter of 2026, introducing fresh styling, updated technology and a Wilderness derivative to the line-up.
What is it?
The seventh-generation Outback arrives as a completely new model rather than a facelift. It continues Subaru’s formula of combining family-car comfort with all-wheel-drive practicality, but its design and specification represent a clear step forward. The Wilderness derivative adds a more rugged option for buyers who regularly venture off tarred roads.
Exterior:
The latest Outback adopts a more upright stance, with a larger grille and stronger SUV presence than its predecessor. The Wilderness version builds on this with protective cladding and distinctive detailing, signalling its off-road intent. Both derivatives retain the Outback’s familiar estate-like proportions but with sharper styling cues to emphasise capability.
Interior:
The cabin has been thoroughly revised. A 12.1-inch touchscreen dominates the centre console, complemented by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, ensuring seamless connectivity. The five-seat layout remains, with split-folding rear seats providing flexibility for family travel. Materials and finishes have been updated to give a more modern feel.
Equipment:
Safety and driver assistance are central to the new Outback. Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology is standard, incorporating adaptive cruise control and pre-collision braking. The Wilderness adds dual-function X-Mode for enhanced traction on difficult surfaces. The model also benefits from a Top Safety Pick+ award from the United States Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, underlining its credentials. Convenience features include the updated infotainment system and comprehensive connectivity options.
Line-up:
South African buyers will have two choices: the 2.5 Premium and the 2.4 Wilderness. The Premium is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder Boxer engine producing 137kW and 254Nm of torque.
The Wilderness uses a turbocharged 2.4-litre Boxer delivering 194kW and 382Nm. Both engines are paired with Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The Wilderness further distinguishes itself with its off-road enhancements, while the Premium offers a more conventional specification.
Both derivatives will be covered by Subaru Southern Africa’s five-year/105 000 km maintenance plan and five-year/150 000 km warranty, with optional extensions available.
