Nissan has introduced the Tekton, a new compact SUV for the South African market. The model is built on the Renault‑Nissan alliance’s CMF‑B platform and is closely related to the Renault Duster, sharing engines and mechanical components.
What is it?
The Tekton is positioned as a compact SUV designed to meet the needs of young families moving into the segment. It is manufactured in Chennai, India, and exported to 50 markets across Africa and the Middle East. Nissan has styled the Tekton to resemble the larger Patrol, giving it a distinct identity.
Exterior:
The exterior design of the Tekton draws heavily from the Nissan Patrol. It features a squared‑off bonnet, large fenders and a full‑width chrome grille. Signature C‑shaped LED headlamps with daytime running lights define the front, while connected LED tail lamps and a double‑C skid plate anchors the rear. Aero‑tuned spoilers, flush roof rails and muscular arches add to the SUV’s proportions. Buyers can choose between 17‑inch and 18‑inch wheels, with ground clearance set at 212 mm.
Interior:
The cabin has been designed around practicality and space. It offers a luggage capacity of 700 litres, expanding to 1 789 litres with the rear seats folded. A 10.1‑inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard, complemented by a digital instrument cluster and e‑shifter with paddle shifters. Higher‑grade models add dual‑zone climate control, ventilated front seats, wireless charging, leatherette upholstery, a powered driver’s seat and a powered tailgate.
Model line‑up:
Five derivatives are available. The entry‑level Visia 1.0 is equipped with a manual gearbox, while the Visia 1.3 introduces a dual‑clutch transmission. The Acenta 1.3 builds on this with additional equipment, followed by the Tekna 1.3 which adds premium features. The flagship Tekna+ 1.3 offers the most comprehensive specification, including exclusive two‑tone paint and further luxury amenities.
Powertrains:
The Tekton range is powered exclusively by turbo‑petrol engines. The 1.0‑litre three‑cylinder produces 74 kW and 160 Nm, paired with a six‑speed manual transmission. The 1.3‑litre four‑cylinder delivers 120 kW and 260 Nm, driving the front wheels through a dual‑clutch transmission.
Prices and warranty:
The Tekton 1.0 Visia (R339 999) serves as the entry point. The Tekton 1.3 Visia (R399 999) introduces the dual‑clutch option. The Tekton 1.3 Acenta (R459 999) adds more equipment, while the Tekton 1.3 Tekna (R499 999) offers premium features. The Tekton 1.3 Tekna+ (R529 999) is the flagship. All models are sold with a six‑year/150 000 km mechanical warranty, roadside assistance and a two‑year/60 000 km service plan.
Other Nissan news:
Alongside the Tekton, Nissan showcased the upcoming Patrol, scheduled for introduction in South Africa in early 2027. The eighth‑generation model will feature a turbo‑charged petrol V6 engine producing 317 kW and 700 Nm. A special edition of the X‑Trail, named Rock Creek, was also displayed. It adds rugged styling, red Nissan badging, a custom Baja Storm paint finish and interior detailing with red stitching.
