Since making its debut on South African roads in 1969, the Toyota Hilux has grown into more than just a trusted vehicle. It has become part of the nation’s motoring heritage, a name synonymous with reliability and strength.
What is it?
To celebrate this enduring legacy, Toyota South Africa has, over the years, introduced a number of special-edition Hilux models that mark important milestones in the vehicle’s journey. The Legend 35 was the first in 2004, followed by the Legend 40 in 2010, the Legend 45 in 2014, and the Legend 50 in 2019. Each edition carried the Hilux story forward.
Now, Toyota takes the next step with the Hilux Legend 55. This new special-edition line-up replaces the outgoing Legend models and will be available until 2026. Customers can choose between two body styles – the versatile Xtra Cab or the family-ready Double Cab – both of which retain the hallmarks of their predecessors, while introducing thoughtful updates to design and convenience.
Interior:
The cabin of the Hilux Legend 55 highlights its dual character: robust and refined. Attention to detail is clear in elements such as chrome-branded scuff plates, heavy-duty rubber floormats, and sports seats with embroidered headrests. These touches highlight its limited-edition status.
At its centre is an 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system, equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This system is complemented by a premium 9-speaker JBL audio set-up, ensuring that every drive – whether across town or across provinces – is accompanied by rich, clear sound.
Exterior:
The Legend 55 gets exclusive badging, a protective front bash plate, and a secure lockable roller shutter balance style with utility. On Double Cab models, distinctive features such as a puddle light logo projection and a shark-fin antenna add to its modern appeal. Functionality is not forgotten: a rubberised load box, branded styling bar, detachable tow bar and roof ornament round off the package.
Engine:
The Legend 55 is powered by Toyota’s 2.8-litre GD-6 turbodiesel engine, paired to a 6-speed transmission and it the engine produces 150kW and 500Nm of torque.
Prices:
Toyota Hilux Legend 55 2.8 GD-6 Xtra Cab AT (R728 300), Toyota Hilux Legend 55 2.8 GD-6 4×4 Xtra Cab AT (R813 700), Toyota Hilux Legend 55 2.8 GD-6 Double Cab AT (R885 700) and the Toyota Hilux Legend 55 2.8 GD-6 4×4 Double Cab AT (R935 900).
