What is it?
The Haval H7 is aimed at motorists who want a vehicle capable of handling daily commuting duties while remaining comfortable tackling weekend adventures. Its rugged appearance, elevated ground clearance and available four-wheel-drive systems position it as a more adventure-focused alternative within the growing midsize SUV segment.
Exterior:
A bold, upright design gives the H7 a strong road presence. The SUV adopts a distinctive boxy silhouette. The squared-off proportions, muscular bodywork and rugged styling cues reinforce its adventure-focused character, claims GWM.
Practicality remains a key focus, with every derivative featuring a full-size spare wheel rather than the temporary spares commonly found in the segment. The H7 also boasts a 25-degree approach angle, 32-degree departure angle, 210mm of ground clearance and a wading depth of 580mm, allowing it to venture further off the beaten track.
Interior:
The cabin combines modern technology with everyday practicality. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster works alongside a 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, while a 9-inch head-up display projects key driving information directly into the driver's field of vision.
Voice control can manage 17 vehicle functions, reducing the need for manual inputs while on the move. The H7 is also equipped with a 50W wireless charging pad, a 10-speaker audio system and a panoramic sunroof fitted as standard across the range.
Comfort levels are enhanced through heated and ventilated front seats, while higher-specification models add power seat adjustment and memory settings. Storage space is plentiful, with 43 individual storage areas throughout the cabin. The luggage compartment offers 586 litres of capacity, expanding to 1 404 litres with the rear seats folded flat.
Engine:
GWM offers the H7 with three distinct powertrains.
The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine produces 170kW and 380Nm, paired with a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission. Hybrid buyers can opt for the 1.5-litre HEV model, which develops 182kW and 540Nm while claiming fuel consumption of just 5.3 litres/100km.
The plug-in hybrid range introduces even greater performance. The 1.5-litre PHEV delivers either 240kW and 540Nm in two-wheel-drive form or up to 280kW and 670Nm in the flagship Hi4 all-wheel-drive derivative. The latter completes the 0-100km/h sprint in just 5.8 seconds while also offering a useful electric-only driving range, says the manufacturer.
Model line-up and pricing:
The range opens with the Haval H7 2.0T Super Luxury 4x2 9DCT (R554 900), followed by the Haval H7 2.0T Ultra Luxury 4x2 9DCT (R594 900) and the Haval H7 2.0T Ultra Luxury 4x4 9DCT (R654 900).
Electrified options include the Haval H7 1.5T HEV Super Luxury 4x2 DHT (R624 900), the Haval H7 1.5T PHEV Super Luxury 4x2 DHT (R734 900) and the range-topping Haval H7 1.5T PHEV Ultra Luxury 4x4 DHT (R794 900).
Warranty and service plan:
The all-new Haval H7 is covered by a seven-year/200 000km warranty, a seven-year/75 000km service plan and seven years of unlimited-kilometre roadside assistance. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid derivatives also benefit from an eight-year/150 000km battery warranty. Service intervals are scheduled every 15 000km or 12 months.
Charging time remains a worry for many South Africans considering an electric vehicle, who still see it as a disruption rather than a quick stop at a filling station. That view is starting to shift.
