MG pulls back the curtain on its next wave of SUVs

MG Motor South Africa used its MG Tech Day and Premium SUV Family launch event to show what is coming to its SUV range. The brand was founded in Britain in 1924, and in 1931 its EX120 ‘Magic Midget’ became the first 750 cc car to exceed 160 km/h.

Representatives from the national dealer network and the media experienced the technology in the all-new MG QS flagship, the newly introduced MG HS HYBRID+ and PHEV, and two new normally aspirated MG ZS Pro models.

Jack Wang, Vice President of MG Motor South Africa says they believe that the event not only shows the level of technological advancement of the MG brand and its SUV range, but also how accessible these technologies are to all buyers.

MG QS:

The QS joins the line up as the flagship at the start of 2027. It introduces a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, a new intelligent hydraulic suspension with continuous damping control (CDC) and the most comprehensive version of MG Pilot, the brand’s suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), yet fitted to an MG SUV.

It is a true seven-seater, with three full size rows rather than an occasional third row. Its 2 915 mm wheelbase is intended to carry seven occupants in comfort. Buyers can choose between 2.0 litre turbo petrol and plug in hybrid powertrains, with a premium cabin and Bose premium audio.

MG HS HYBRID+ and PHEV:

The HYBRID+ now has a higher capacity 1.83 kWh liquid cooled battery, bringing better fuel efficiency, a longer electric only range and smoother transitions between its eight propulsion modes.

The flagship HS PHEV uses a 24.7 kWh battery for an electric only range of up to 120 km (WLTP) and a marked increase in peak power. It can be recharged from an external source, at home or on the go. First customer deliveries of both models are expected in January 2027.

MG ZS PRO 1.5:

The ZS PRO is already one of MG Motor’s most popular models in South Africa, and a normally aspirated petrol engine joins the range. Paired with a next generation CVT, it uses 6.7 litres of fuel per 100 km on the combined cycle.

Wang described the spread of technology on show at the event this way: “Our MG Tech Day offered something for everyone, from the new drivetrain and in-cabin technologies on show in our new entry-level MG ZS Pro models to the cutting-edge drivetrain, suspension and luxury technologies that we will soon introduce at the other end of the spectrum in the MG QS flagship.”
