The next Hyundai Elantra has only just broken cover, yet attention is already shifting to the version that enthusiasts really want: the next Elantra N.
Revealed in standard form at the 2026 Busan Mobility Show as the Avante for Korea, the eighth-generation sedan gives Hyundai’s N division a larger, more modern and more aggressive canvas to work from.
The basic car is already a sizeable step forward. The new Elantra is longer, wider and more spacious than before. It also swaps the old model’s busy, angular surfacing for a cleaner interpretation of Hyundai’s Art of Steel styling.
Hyundai’s design boss, SangYup Lee, has already suggested that an even sportier Elantra is on the way, complete with wider fenders and a more focused stance. On a car that now has stronger shoulders, bolder wheel arches and a lower-looking body, those changes could make the next Elantra N appear much closer to a road-going touring car than a warmed-over compact sedan.
The mechanical story could be even more interesting. The current Elantra N’s 2.0-litre turbocharged engine is admired for its character and responsiveness, but the replacement may move to a 2.5-litre turbocharged unit. That engine family already produces around 216kW in the Sonata N Line and about 223kW in some Genesis applications, so a meaningful increase over today’s 205kW Elantra N looks possible.
Hyundai has also been testing a new high-performance powertrain in motorsport. Its Elantra N1 RP prototype ran at the Nürburgring 24 Hours with a next-generation engine package claimed to improve power delivery, response and durability while meeting emissions demands. If that development work feeds into the showroom car, the new N could feel more sophisticated as well as quicker.
Inside, the regular Elantra introduces a more digital layout, including the Pleos Connect infotainment system, a large central display and the Gleo AI voice assistant. The N version should add its own graphics, sports seats, drive mode controls and more assertive trim, while keeping physical climate and audio buttons for everyday usability.
Hyundai has not confirmed a launch date or full specification, but the ingredients are already promising. With sedan rivals thinning out and hot hatch choices becoming increasingly limited, the next Elantra N could arrive as one of the most appealing affordable performance cars of its generation.
