SVI Engineering has unveiled something rather unusual at Securex South Africa 2026 in Johannesburg. Imagine the luxury of a private jet, but without wings and firmly planted on tarmac.
Their latest creation is a discreetly armoured Mercedes-Benz Sprinter that doubles as a rolling sanctuary, complete with indulgent comforts and serious ballistic protection.
Space to stretch out:
The base vehicle is the Mercedes-Benz 517 CDI Sprinter long-wheelbase, stripped and rebuilt with a bespoke B6 armouring package. This includes custom steel plates, lightweight composites and ballistic glass shaped to factory specifications, offering protection against assault rifles such as the AK47, R1 and R5.
A bulkhead separates the driver and security detail from the rear quarters, which benefit from the Sprinter’s generous 4 325mm wheelbase and overall length of 6 967mm. The result is a cavernous lounge-like space where SVI’s engineers have fitted a range of amenities.
“Our goal with this project was to create a first-class experience akin to that of a private jet for the road. From the moment the doors close, the outside world ceases to exist. The lucky passengers are wrapped in an environment of absolute opulence, all while enjoying the peace of mind that comes with SVI-engineered armour,” explains Nicol Louw, SVI’s Business Development Director.
A lounge on wheels:
Inside, two luxury seats offer reclining and massaging functions. Clients can choose finishes such as carpets or wooden flooring. The show vehicle even boasts a 55-inch television that rises and lowers, paired with a high-end sound system.
Amenities extend to a pair of fridges, a kitchen area and an enclosed restroom with toilet facilities. A dedicated air-conditioning system keeps the lounge comfortable, while extensive sound-proofing ensures privacy. Suspension tuning has been adjusted to deliver a smooth ride.
Externally, the Sprinter wears black paint with a premium grille and bumper. Under the bonnet sits Mercedes-Benz’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder OM654 turbodiesel engine, producing 125kW and 400Nm, driving the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic gearbox.
“By combining our proven armouring expertise with a bespoke, high-end interior configuration, we believe we have set a new benchmark for secure, discreet VIP transport. Ultimately, this vehicle proves that you do not have to sacrifice first-class comfort and space for the highest level of ballistic protection available to civilians. Quite simply, there’s nothing else like it on the market,” he adds.
