The Geely Coolray has been introduced to South Africa, expanding the brand’s local line-up with a compact SUV that blends performance, practicality and technology. It is the latest addition to Geely’s portfolio here.
What is it?
The Coolray is a compact SUV positioned to compete in one of South Africa’s busiest segments. Globally, it is Geely’s most widely exported SUV, already established in Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Africa and Latin America. Locally, it becomes part of Geely’s growing range, making it the fourth model available to South African buyers alongside the brand’s electric and hybrid offerings.
Exterior:
The Coolray adopts Geely’s latest design language with sharp body surfacing and a muscular shoulder line. A two-tone roof is available on higher trims, while the front fascia features a vertical-slat grille framed by aerodynamic fins and sleek LED headlamps. At the rear, twin-pod LED taillamps and a diffuser-inspired bumper emphasise its sporty stance. The flagship Vertex model adds a motorsport-inspired rear wing with integrated side fins and “S” badging, marking it out as the most distinctive derivative.
Interior:
The cabin is modern and driver-focused, dominated by a 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, supported by Bluetooth and multiple USB ports. Depending on trim, features include wireless charging, ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof and an electric tailgate. The Coolray seats five and offers 330 litres of luggage space, expanding to 1 054 litres with the rear seats folded.
Powertrains:
All derivatives use Geely’s 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 128kW and 290Nm. Power is delivered through a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission to the front wheels. The combination enables a 0–100 km/h time of 7.6 seconds and a combined fuel consumption of 6.5 litres per 100 km, Geely claims. Drivers can select between Eco, Comfort, Sport and Adaptive modes to tailor performance to conditions.
Spec levels:
Three derivatives are offered. The entry-level Nova includes alloy wheels, LED lighting, keyless entry, a 14.6-inch infotainment display and a full safety suite.
The mid-range Vanguard adds 18-inch gloss-black alloys, leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, ambient lighting and a 540-degree camera system.
The flagship Vertex introduces a panoramic sunroof, electric tailgate, wireless charging, motorsport-inspired styling and advanced driver assistance systems such as Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assist.
Prices and warranties:
The Coolray range is priced as follows: Nova (R369 900), Vanguard (R399 900) and the Vertex (R429 900).
All models are covered by Geely Care+, which includes a 5-year/150 000km-vehicle warranty, a 5-year/150 000km-engine warranty, a 5-year/50 000km-service plan and 5-year unlimited roadside assistance.
