The BYD ATTO 2 DM-i has been introduced locally as a compact plug-in hybrid SUV, aimed at making electrified mobility more accessible to South African motorists. It combines electric efficiency with the flexibility of a petrol engine, offering long range and practical usability, the manufacturer says.

The ATTO 2 DM-i is a plug-in hybrid SUV positioned in the competitive compact segment. It uses BYD’s DM-i Super Hybrid system, blending electric drive with a petrol engine. With a combined driving range of up to 930km, it is designed for both daily commuting and longer trips. The model sits between conventional combustion SUVs and full battery-electric vehicles, appealing to buyers seeking lower running costs without range anxiety.
Powertrain:
The ATTO 2 DM-i uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 72kW and 122Nm, paired with an electric motor rated at 145kW and 300Nm. In hybrid operation, the system delivers a combined maximum output of 122 kW, with a 7.85kWh Blade Battery enabling up to 40km of pure electric driving.
Charging is supported at 3.3 kW AC, with scheduled charging available. Fuel consumption is listed at 5.1 L/100 km, meeting Euro 5 emission standards.
Interior:
Inside, the ATTO 2 DM-i offers seating for five with a cargo capacity of 425 litres, expandable to 1 335 litres. The cabin features a rotating touchscreen infotainment system (10.1-inch in Comfort, 12.8-inch in Dynamic), wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a full LCD instrument panel. The Dynamic model adds premium PU seating, electric driver’s seat adjustment, a 50W-wireless phone charger, and six speakers compared to four in the Comfort. Both derivatives include advanced driver-assistance systems and multiple airbags.
Exterior:
The SUV measures 4 330mm in length, 1 830mm in width and 1 675mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2 620mm. Styling highlights include LED headlamps, a panoramic sunroof, and alloy-wheels. Exterior colour options include Obsidian Black, Midnight Blue, Time Grey and Skiing White. The Dynamic model further offers electric-folding mirrors with integrated foot lights.
Model line-up:
Two derivatives are available: Comfort and Dynamic. Both share the same hybrid powertrain and Blade Battery technology. The Dynamic adds features such as adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, front parking radars, additional safety assistance systems, and upgraded interior trim. Comfort provides a simpler specification but retains key hybrid and connectivity features.
Price:
Pricing starts at R449 900 for the Comfort and R489 900 for the Dynamic.
