The University of South Africa (UNISA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Messe Frankfurt South Africa, a move that places African academia at the centre of major trade exhibitions.
The agreement, formalised in Frankfurt, Germany, during the Techtextil and Texprocess fairs, highlights the growing importance of linking education with industry.
While the partnership spans several sectors, its potential impact on the automotive industry is particularly notable. UNISA has identified Automotive Studies as one of its catalytic niche areas, alongside aviation and digitalisation. With South Africa’s automotive sector facing global competition and the transition towards new technologies, the collaboration offers a platform for research and industry dialogue.
Events such as AERO South Africa and AllFashion Sourcing will showcase UNISA’s involvement, but the automotive dimension is expected to gain traction through future exhibitions and conference sessions. By contributing research perspectives and engaging with industry leaders, UNISA aims to strengthen the visibility of African expertise in areas such as vehicle design, manufacturing, and the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Professor Puleng LenkaBula, UNISA’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor, emphasised that the institution’s vision is rooted in service to humanity, with students already active in industries that shape the country. The partnership provides opportunities for these students to connect their academic work with practical challenges in sectors like automotive manufacturing, where innovation and sustainability are pressing concerns.
For South Africa, the agreement signals a step towards integrating higher education with industrial development, ensuring that knowledge and practice advance together in shaping future mobility.
