Freelander 8 signals new chapter in Chery and JLR collaboration

The launch of a new vehicle brand is a relatively rare event in the automotive industry, making the arrival of Freelander one of the more notable developments of 2026.

Created through a collaboration between Chery and JLR, the new marque has now revealed its first production model, the Freelander 8 plug-in hybrid SUV, as part of an international expansion strategy that will begin in the Middle East.

The global roll-out will begin in the United Arab Emirates during the first quarter of 2027 before expanding to other Middle Eastern and left-hand-drive markets. Australia and New Zealand will follow, ahead of Europe, the United Kingdom and Ireland. South African launch plans have yet to be announced.

Additional details of the Freelander 8 were presented during Freelander Nightfall in Wuhu, China, on 19 October as part of the 2026 Chery International User Summit. The event marked the debut of the international five-seat version, which joins an existing six-seat derivative and gives buyers a choice between two-row and three-row configurations.

The vehicle was first unveiled in Abu Dhabi on 29 September, introducing Freelander as a standalone brand jointly developed by Chery and JLR. While JLR has led the design direction of the project, Chery has contributed vehicle technology and its global manufacturing and supply network.

Power comes from a plug-in hybrid system that combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 34.12 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive layout. In Middle East specification, the system produces 460 kW and 662 Nm, allowing the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds.

The battery provides an electric-only driving range of up to 110 km, while the combined range is quoted at 886 km with a full fuel tank and fully charged battery. Charging capability includes 11 kW AC charging and DC fast charging that can replenish the battery from 20% to 80% in 20 minutes or less.

Chassis technology has been developed to support both on-road comfort and off-road capability. The Freelander 8 features dual-chamber air suspension and continuously controlled damping, allowing the vehicle to adapt to changing surfaces. Ground clearance can reach 266 mm, while electronic traction systems include a virtual centre differential lock and an electronic limited-slip differential.

The Intelligent All-Terrain System incorporates nine operating modes, including seven terrain-specific settings, Smart Mode and Expert Mode. Under test conditions, the vehicle is capable of tackling a 70% gradient and wading through water up to 900 mm deep.

Inside the cabin, a Qualcomm SA8295P automotive-grade processor supports the vehicle's digital systems, including a 46.3-inch Mini LED display. The model is equipped with L2+ driver-assistance technology as standard and will also feature an AI-powered voice assistant developed specifically for the brand.

More than 30 driver-assistance functions will be fitted as standard. Automated valet parking is also planned for selected markets where regulations and operating conditions permit.
