Motorists travelling over the Easter period can expect heavy traffic across South Africa’s road network, with authorities warning that routes to Limpopo will come under particular pressure as thousands of pilgrims make their way to Moria.
The Department of Transport has confirmed that the 2026 Easter Road Safety Campaign is under way, with a strong focus on reducing crashes during what remains one of the busiest and highest-risk travel periods of the year.

The annual gathering at Moria, organised by the Zion Christian Church, is a defining feature of Easter travel in South Africa. Each year it draws hundreds of thousands of worshippers, many of whom travel long distances by bus, taxi and private vehicles.
According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), this mass movement significantly increases traffic volumes, particularly along routes leading into Polokwane and surrounding areas. The concentration of public transport vehicles, combined with long-distance driving, creates a challenging environment for motorists.
Authorities have repeatedly cautioned that this influx does not affect a single route only, but rather places strain on an entire network of roads feeding the Moria area, making congestion widespread during peak travel periods.
Key corridors under strain:
The N1 north corridor remains the main route into Limpopo and is expected to carry the bulk of traffic from Gauteng and central South Africa. As vehicles move closer to Polokwane, congestion typically intensifies and spreads onto connecting regional routes.
The RTMC notes that Easter travel patterns are shaped by both holidaymakers and religious gatherings, meaning traffic volumes increase sharply and remain elevated over several days. This is particularly evident from Thursday into Good Friday, as well as during the return journey from Sunday into Easter Monday.
Enforcement and safety focus:
Authorities have indicated that law enforcement visibility will be significantly increased during the Easter period. This includes roadside checks, monitoring of public transport vehicles and patrols along major routes.
The Department of Transport has also highlighted that while the latest available data from 2025 showed an improvement in road safety outcomes, driver behaviour remains the leading cause of crashes. Speeding, fatigue and unsafe overtaking continue to be key concerns, especially on long-distance routes where traffic volumes are high.
Motorists are therefore urged to plan ahead, allow sufficient travel time and remain patient in congested conditions, particularly when sharing the road with buses and heavy vehicles.
