CMS Systems is celebrating 25 years in business, marking a significant milestone for a company that has become a central player in automotive retail technology.
From its early days as a niche technology provider, the company has grown into a widely used platform that underpins dealership operations across multiple markets, particularly in Africa.
As part of its 25-year celebrations, CMS Systems used a recent gala event in Johannesburg to outline its next phase of development. Central to this is the introduction of the CMS ONE ECO System, a new platform designed to unify dealership operations within a single, data driven environment.
After 25 years:
Over the past quarter century, CMS Systems has built a reputation around developing software as a service solution tailored specifically for the automotive sector. Its systems are designed to help dealerships manage nearly every aspect of their operations, from handling customer leads and tracking sales performance to managing stock and overseeing aftersales services. At its core, the business focuses on improving efficiency and helping dealerships respond to an increasingly digital and data driven marketplace.
Today, the scale of its operations reflects that growth. CMS Systems supports more than 1 300 dealer floors and works with over 30 vehicle manufacturers. Its platforms are used by more than 23 000 individuals, while over 75 000 vehicles are listed online daily through its network, spanning dozens of advertising platforms and social media channels. Each month, the system distributes more than 225 000 electronic leads, connecting potential buyers with dealerships in real time.
The company’s footprint now extends beyond South Africa into several international markets, including Namibia, Zambia, Malawi, Angola and Mauritius, as well as further afield in places such as Malta and Yemen. This expansion reflects a broader shift towards digital retail solutions in the automotive sector, particularly in emerging markets.
Built on long term partnerships:
A notable aspect of CMS Systems’ history is the longevity of its client relationships. Some of its original dealer partners remain part of its network today. This has allowed the company to refine its offerings over time, adapting its systems to meet changing industry demands while maintaining a stable user base.
Its platform has evolved into a comprehensive ecosystem, integrating customer relationship management tools with operational dashboards that provide insights at multiple levels, from individual sales staff to dealer groups and manufacturers. This level of integration has become increasingly important as dealerships look to consolidate systems and gain clearer visibility over performance.
Future technology:
The introduction of the CMS ONE ECO System is a key component with embedded artificial intelligence capability known as Wilson i.
The technology is intended to provide real time insights, automate routine processes and assist with decision making. Features include predictive analytics, enhanced customer profiling and improved communication tools, all aimed at helping dealerships respond more effectively to market conditions and customer needs.
The move towards integrating artificial intelligence reflects a broader trend within the automotive retail sector, where data is increasingly seen as a critical asset. By embedding these capabilities directly into its platform, CMS Systems is positioning itself to remain relevant in a rapidly evolving industry.
While its core offering remains rooted in supporting dealerships, its future direction suggests a greater emphasis on data, automation and connected digital ecosystems.
