Volvo restructuring its operations in SA

Volvo Car South Africa is restructuring its operations in the country as part of a long-term brand strategic realignment.

Indications are that the number of Volvo dealerships will decrease, and although Volvo did not state by how much, it could be by a significant number, but without affecting the after-sales functions delivered to existing customers.

“While we have plans to resize our dealer network locally, Volvo remains fully committed to the South African market. This commitment is evident in the continued investment in electrified mobility and the introduction of new models,” Volvo says in a statement to Dealerfloor.

The manufacturer says all customers affected by the dealer network restructuring will be taken care of, and existing warranty and service agreements will remain unaffected. “We are committed to providing the highest level of care through our existing service network. Our official contact channels are prepared and available to handle any customer inquiries,” according to the statement.

Volvo refines its operations — including adjustments to its marketing and commercial strategy — this will strengthen how Volvo vehicles are positioned and retailed through the dealer network as Volvo is the top-selling EV brand in South Africa.

Looking ahead, Volvo continues to expand its local line-up, with the flagship all-electric EX90 set to arrive in the first half of 2025.

Leading the charge to the top was the Volvo EX30, the compact electric crossover that dominated the market. With 406 units sold during the year, it earned the title of South Africa’s best-selling battery-electric vehicle for 2024 and is also a finalist in the 2025 Car of the Year (COTY) competition, the only electric contender among 17 finalists.

The EX30’s larger siblings, the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, further solidified Volvo’s leadership. With 133 units sold, the model line was placed third overall. Volvo delivered 539 electric vehicles in 2024, outselling its nearest competitor by 20.86%.

“Looking ahead, the upcoming flagship EX90 will accelerate Volvo’s electric ambitions even further, while the imminent reveal of the rugged EX30 Cross Country will cater to environmentally conscious adventurers. Volvo’s sales achievements in South Africa reflect Volvo’s unwavering commitment to shaping a sustainable future through innovative mobility solutions — regardless of the market,” says Markus Cromwell, Commercial Director at Volvo Car South Africa regarding their sales success.
