The truck business, especially when selling a brand like FAW, is doing great in a vehicle market that is sometimes difficult to navigate owing to the continued stock shortages and the low economic growth rate in the country.

“We are fortunate that we do not face this dilemma. Looking from a year-on-year perspective we have managed to increase our market share in our region, and I believe on a national basis as well. The naamsa monthly sales figures show that FAW dominates some segments and is poised to be one of the top three truck manufacturers in the country.”
So says Shaun Fritz, Commercial Sales Manager at the 4Wheels Motor Group in North West, one of the largest FAW groups in South Africa. The group has three commercial dealerships in Mahikeng, where the head office is located, Lichtenburg and Vryburg and cover a large region.

“Owing to the availability of stock, as well as the introduction of new models like the FAW JH6 28.500FT Truck Tractor in the Extra Heavy segment and the new FAW JK6 15.220FL (8 tonner) in the Heavy segment, we are able to give traditional Japanese and European brands a run for their money.
“Talking about money – not only do we have a major price advantage compared to our competition, but the class-leading fuel economy, especially on our new JH6, is crucial for fleet operators. In addition to this, there are the options of tailor-made service and maintenance plans for ease of budgeting, as well as the fact that our vehicles are assembled in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape, is a major contributor to the success of the brand, both locally and in the African Market."
Shaun says that notwithstanding recent reports about well-known transport companies suspending business, they are doing well with fleet businesses. “Even larger fleets are in many cases replacing their older European and Japanese trucks with FAW trucks. Owing to the solid reputation that the Chinese brand has established locally and elsewhere, the acceptance of FAW is first class, and the customer care at our dealerships plays an important role.

He says that the group is also doing well with IVECO, its other commercial brand, with the new IVECO S-Way 430 and 470 HP Truck Tractor series, which was recently launched in South Africa.
“We are fortunate to be part of the process where Iveco South Africa delivered brand new IVECO Daily ambulances to the North West Department of Health. Until now, we have prepared and delivered a total of 11 fully equipped ambulances, with more on the way. Our dealership in Mahikeng will also handle the service and maintenance of the ambulances, he tells Dealerfloor.
“The IVECO Daily is one of the most popular vehicles in its class. Not only does it form the backbone of the ambulance services, but the IVECO Panel Van and long distance taxis are just as important in their different segments. Again, the reputation as a reliable no-nonsense brand contributes immensely to its success,” he says.
The new IVECO S-Way Truck Tractor is now also available at the dealerships in North West.
