Enhancing workshop profitability

Improving gross profit in a motor vehicle workshop involves a combination of effective management practices, operational efficiencies, customer engagement and strategic marketing.

Some pointers for you to consider to help you maximise your workshop's gross profit:

  • Regularly evaluate and adjust your labour rates to match market standards while ensuring they reflect your workshop’s reputation and expertise.
  • Identify bottlenecks in workflow and implement efficient processes to reduce the time between the vehicle arriving and the payment being received for the job.
  • Keep technicians updated on best practices and new technologies to increase service efficiency and reduce comebacks. Technician efficiency can have a considerable effect on the profitability and reputation of your workshop.
  • Look at ways to “upsell” by identifying additional work and ensure that you have the business processes in place to ensure that you can monetise the opportunities created. Train staff to effectively communicate service recommendations based on vehicle inspections without being overly aggressive.
  • Look at service packages that will appeal to your client base. Once again, these need to be researched, marketed and processed efficiently in order to maximise opportunities.
  • Consider expanding your service offering if you have the capacity to do so. Accessory fitment and wheel alignment are two areas that come to mind.
  • Market your service department as if you don’t have a captive client base to rely on. Look at the marketing efforts of the independent service outlets.
  • Understand what data you have from a financial, vehicle and customer perspective and look for ways to use this information to give you a competitive edge.
  • Incentivise employees to ensure that the business objectives are met and exceeded. Don’t be afraid to share the additional profitability generously.
  • Regularly review the financial performance of the workshop so that you are able to identify both the over- and underperformance areas.

By implementing these strategies, a motor vehicle workshop can position itself for better gross profits, improved customer satisfaction and sustained business growth. Each strategy may require customisation to fit your specific business context and market, so consider pilots or phased approaches as necessary.
