The new facility, situated in Meridian Drive in Umhlanga, forms part of the brand’s broader dealer expansion strategy aimed at increasing its footprint and improving customer access to sales, servicing and aftersales support.
The dealership has been developed according to Changan’s global corporate identity standards and includes sales, servicing, parts and aftersales operations under one roof. The investment has also created permanent jobs across several departments, with staff recruited locally, the manufacturer states.
Dealer growth has become a key focus area for a number of Chinese vehicle brands entering or expanding in South Africa, with manufacturers placing increasing emphasis on building national retail and support networks to compete against more established players.
According to Changan, the Umhlanga facility was selected as a flagship site because of its location within one of KwaZulu-Natal’s busiest commercial and retail hubs.
Customers visiting the dealership will have access to a broad range of models, including the Alsvin sedan, UNI-S SUV, CS75 Pro and the Hunter Diesel bakkie range. The showroom will also feature the Deepal S07 electric vehicle as the company expands its presence in the new energy vehicle segment.
Feisal Essack, Dealer Principal of Changan Umhlanga, says the dealership represented a long term investment between the retailer, importer and manufacturer.
“This facility is the result of a strong partnership between Changan, Jameel Motors, and our dealership group, built on a shared vision of growth, customer excellence and sustainable long-term investment. We are proud to partner with a global automotive brand that combines innovation, quality, and value in a way that strongly resonates with the South African consumer,” he says.
The expansion comes as Chinese manufacturers continue increasing their share of the South African market, particularly in the passenger vehicle and SUV segments where aggressive pricing and growing model line ups have helped drive sales growth.
Jameel Motors, which manages the Changan brand locally, says the company’s investment strategy extends beyond product introductions and includes retail infrastructure and operational support.
Marinus Venter, General Manager of Jameel Motors South Africa, says the dealer network remained central to the brand’s local ambitions.
“The launch of the Changan Umhlanga flagship dealership represents far more than simply opening another showroom facility. It reflects our long-term commitment to South Africa, our confidence in the growth potential of the local market, and our focus on building a dealer network that delivers genuine customer support and long-term value,” he says.
Stephanie Wang, Sales Director of Changan MEA, also attended the opening and outlined several new products planned for the local market, including hybrid and electric models.
“South Africa is a key growth market for Changan, and our upcoming product pipeline reflects our long-term commitment to the country. From our light commercial vehicle range to the Nevo Q05, Deepal S05 and UNI-S HEV, we are focused on bringing South African customers greater choice, advanced technology, efficient performance and practical mobility solutions designed for the future,” Stephanie says.
